Senior Lecturer/Lecturer: Control Systems (Permanent post)

The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Stellenbosch University offers leading educational and research programmes in the fields of computer and control systems as well as machine learning and data engineering. A limited number of Senior Lecturer/Lecturer/Junior Lecturer positions have recently become available in the Department in these fields. The Department is therefore looking for excellent candidates to fill these positions. The Department has well-established research laboratories as well as teaching and engineering infrastructures in these fields.

This is a permanent appointment. It is expected of successful candidates who do not have PhD qualifications, to enrol for PhD studies and obtain the degree within a reasonable amount of time.

Duties:

- Teaching and administration of general undergraduate modules and of specialised undergraduate and postgraduate modules in control systems;
- Supervising final year projects and postgraduate (Masters and PhD) students in the field of control systems;
- Performing basic and/or applied research focused on relevant research areas within control system engineering;
- Collaborating with existing research partners within the Department and building of networks with other universities, industry and government organisations in order to promote research and development programmes in the field of control systems at Stellenbosch University;
- Performing supporting, administrative and representative roles within and outside the Department.

Requirements:

- An applicable Bachelor’s degree (such as BEng) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, as recognised by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) to qualify for registration as a Professional Engineer;
- An appropriate Master’s degree (typically MEng or MScEng) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from a recognised academic university;
- A PhD qualification in the field of control systems from a recognised academic university, for appointment as senior lecturer;
- In an advanced stage of a PhD study at a recognised national or international tertiary institution in the field of control systems, or extensive and proven industry experience in the field of control systems to be appointed as lecturer;
- The ability to communicate clearly in at least English and to teach courses and modules as described under duties above;
- A solid knowledge of and experience in the field of control systems;
- A proven and relevant publication record in the field of control systems in international peer-reviewed journals and/or conference proceedings, or extensive and proven industry experience in the field of control systems.

Recommendations:

- Appropriate industry experience;
- Registration as a Professional Engineer;
- An NRF rating as researcher;
- A PhD qualification in the field of control systems from a recognised academic university, for appointment as lecturer;
- Previous tertiary teaching experience, both at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level;
- Ability to function in a multidisciplinary environment;
- A proven record of the ability to obtain external funding for research.
