Operational Manager: Process Engineering

The Department of Process Engineering offers a strong undergraduate programme in Chemical Engineering and a significant research activity in the areas of Bioresource Engineering, Extractive Metallurgy, Separations Technology, Waste Valorisation and Water Technology. In support of continuous growth, the Department needs to appoint an Operational Manager who can provide a strong contribution in support of this strategy.

Duties:- Managing the operational aspects of the Department’s activities, including occupational health and safety, risk reviews, task observations and authorisation to work, fire, safety and security, general management of laboratories, management of technical support staff, legislative compliance, emergency preparedness, and safety training of students, staff and contractors;
- Managing the physical infrastructure of the Department, including maintenance of equipment, testing, certification, inspections, planning, cleaning and space utilisation;
- Facilitating undergraduate and postgraduate experiments, including planning, management and maintenance of equipment;
- Assisting with activities such as marketing and other similar activities within the Department and broader faculty context.
Requirements:
- A four-year degree in Chemical Engineering and compliance with criteria for registration as a Professional Engineer;
- Technical competency in process technologies;
- Managerial experience;
- Minimum of three years’ applicable experience in an operational process engineering environment and in total five years’ experience since obtaining a bachelor’s degree;
- Experience in process safety management as defined by the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related regulatory bodies;
- Good interpersonal skills and written and verbal communication skills in both English and Afrikaans.
Recommendations:
- Experience as an OHS Act Section 8.2.1 appointee or similar;
- PrEng, or equivalent professional certification.
