Job purpose:

Responsible for the installation, configuration, upgrade, administration, monitoring and maintenance of complex multi database environments.
Participates in the design and creation of complex databases.
Responsible for quality control and auditing of databases to ensure accurate and appropriate use of data.
Works with management to develop database strategies to support company needs.
Consults with and advises users on access to various databases.
Works directly with users to resolve data conflicts and inappropriate data usage.
Directs the maintenance and use of the corporate data dictionary.
Establishes physical database parameters.
Codes database descriptions and specifies identifiers of database to database management system or directs others in coding database descriptions.

These responsibilities also include performing routine monitoring, performance tuning, database security and input into application design (attending the design forums and Q/A forums).
Also plays an integral role in influencing the design and development of the overall DS system architecture and infrastructure.
Understands the DS database engine, database structure and the impact around the physical design of the DS.
Implements the physical data model and changes to the physical model.
Provides technical leadership to other Teradata database support staff.
Provides a consultation service to other senior Technical Leads within the DS.

Key responsibilities:

Responsible for standards and procedures to be followed within the Teradata database support team.
Responsible for providing a development support service via a formal engagement model.
Skills transfer and provision of technical guidance to other team members.
Directing team priorities and tasks.
Responsible for the implementation of the physical data model on the Teradata database.
Responsible for the creation and maintenance of Teradata objects such as databases, tables, views, indices, users, roles and profiles.
Responsible for the creation and maintenance of database load and unload scripts e.g. multiloads, fastloads, fastexports, tpump.
Responsible for the creation and maintenance of user accounts and ensuring database security.
Responsible for managing and maintaining database usage / capacity.
Responsible for database performance monitoring and performance tuning.
Responsible for the Maintenance and optimisation of Database Workload Management settings.
Responsible for the review and implementation of physical design.
Responsible for table design, index selection, table partitioning.
Responsible for the review and improvement of long running SQL queries.
Responsible for the creation, scheduling and execution of regular maintenance processes.
Responsible for the investigation and implementation of any new features of the database (R&D).
Responsible for the provision of DBA support to all projects within AIM project pipeline.
Responsible for providing input and assistance around capacity planning.
Responsible for providing support for all Teradata-related system upgrade (for software and hardware upgrades).
Responsible for providing a 24 hours service around production support and call-out.
Responsible for the execution and monitoring of weekly full system backups.

Internal and external relationships:

Liaison with Developers, BI Consultants, Information Delivery Managers, DS Production team, Design Architects, Business users and vendor technical support.

Knowledge:

Banking experience.
Degree or Diploma in I.T and the required Certification with 8 to 10 years related experience.
Solid knowledge of Data Base Administration and optimisation.
A thorough understanding of relational and dimensional database design.
Knowledge of Data Warehouse best practices.
Knowledge and technical appreciation of the interconnectivities and interfaces between various technical platforms, operating systems and processes.
Must understand the need to align the IT and business strategies.

Experience:

Experience in Teradata.
Study towards Teradata Masters certification.
Solid LINUX experience.
Understanding of the Teradata architecture.
Good knowledge of Backup and Recovery.
Broad exposure to all facets of Data warehouses (such as development work, Production, DBA work and BI) would be an advantage.
Exposure to other Teradata applications such as TVA and CIM would be an advantage.

Problem solving and innovation is one of the key areas of the job.
Ambiguity – a bad design will result in an implementation that is not acceptable. All ambiguities must be identified and resolved as quickly as possible.
Probability – the probability of batch running over batch window must always be questioned in order that they can be dealt with pro-actively (query performance).
Judgement – being able to look at various options and make a decision on the best one.
Impact – consider the ripple effect and impact to production batch run when solving problems of overall DW design.
Reference – when you cannot solve a problem or are unsure, refer it to someone who has experience in that field.

Must be able to plan ahead in order to ensure delivery in line with various areas requirements.
