Information and Communication Service (ICS)

UWC’s Information and Communication Services (ICS) Department has embarked on an exciting journey of change and transformation, playing a pivotal role in delivering ICT services that enable and support the University’s goals and objectives. In line with growing its capability, an exciting opportunity for an experienced System Administrator: Database is available in the ICS Applications Support unit.
The primary purpose of the System Administrator: Data is to ensure that the University’s (production) Oracle databases are optimised by application of sound database best practices, maintenance and administration tasks.

Key Performance Areas:

- Assume primary responsibility for the performance, integrity and security of the University’s Oracle databases
- Provide line manager with relevant and accurate weekly/monthly operational reports
- Clearly define the needs of users and control / monitor user access (permissions, privileges and revocation)
- Proactively monitor and improve the overall Oracle Database environment (Functionality, Operability, Capacity, Utilisation)
- Install and test new versions of the database management system (DBMS)
- Establish and maintain database security
- Performance monitoring and tuning of the databases
- Development of SQL scripts & procedures
- Schedule scripts to do reporting, updating and maintenance.
- Maintenance of DB portals and web services
- Liaise with offsite DB support specialists where applicable
- Compile database documentation, including data standards, procedures and definitions for the data dictionary (metadata)
- Refine the logical design so that it can be translated into a specific data model
- Refine the physical design to optimize system storage requirements
- Develop, manage and test back-up and recovery plans
- Ensure that storage and archiving procedures function correctly
- Work closely and communicate regularly with project managers, technical applications and infrastructure / operational staff to ensure database integrity and security
- Advise application developers on database functionality and new features
- Apply corrective measures in order to resolve incidents
- Problem investigation, diagnosis, resolution and documentation
- Contribute to the planning, testing and deployment of releases into production
- Working knowledge of integration with other databases such MYSQL, MS SQL, PostgreSQL etc

Minimum Requirements:

- Bachelor’s degree or NQF level 7 qualification in Management Information Systems, or Computer Science, or in a related field
- Conversance with and understanding of basic development and scripting computer languages – MS SQL, the Windows Operating System and Database Design Concepts
- Conversance with and understanding of accounting and different account types in a financial system. (An accounting certification is advantageous but not mandatory)
- Minimum of 5 years’ related experience in financial systems administration in a large organisation
- This position has high access to confidential information, and as such requires strict confidentiality to be adhered to.

- Good business awareness and understanding of IT business requirements
