About the job:

The CSIR have vacancies for Computer Network Security Specialists within the Meraka Institute. The incumbents will ensure and maintain proactive Information and Communication Technology (ICT) security and related services for the National Integrated Infrastructure System (NICIS), including the Data Intensive Research Initiative of South Africa (DIRISA) data storage facility and the South African National Research Network (SANReN). The positions are based in Pretoria.

Key responsibilities:

- Perform vulnerability scanning, reporting, security audits, assessments and penetration testing;
- Advise on ICT security best practices and recommendations;
- Communicate ICT security monitoring findings (e.g. reports);
- Deploy and monitor security sensors, design and deploy robust and reliable ICT security systems
- Monitor security threats and risks, detect and investigate suspicious ICT security events;
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements related to the security and privacy of digital information;
- Perform threat intelligence and technology watch activities;
- Contribute towards the development, adoption of, and ensure compliance with ICT security policies and processes;
- Install, configure, deploy and maintain contemporary and relevant security systems and infrastructure;
- Procure and/or develop required ICT security tools and technologies;
- Code/script/automate repetitive tasks;
- Generate and distribute ICT security alerts and warnings; resolve existing ICT security threats and pre-emptively address such threats;
- Create awareness/educational material;
- Conduct security awareness workshops/training;
- Network with key stakeholders and partners.

Qualifications, skills and experience:

- A Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science or engineering with at least three years’ working experience in the field of information technology; OR
- A Diploma in information technology or computer systems engineering with at least one of the following certifications:
a. Security+/GSEC:GIAC (Global Information Assurance Certification) Security Essentials;
b. SSCP (Systems Security Certified Practitioner);
c. CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional);
d. CEH Certified Ethical Hacker);
e. OSCP Offensive Security Certified Professional);
f. CISA (Certified Information Systems Auditor);
g. CASP (CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner)
- For a diploma at least five years’ working experience in information technology is required;
- Familiarity with open-source tools and operating systems;
- Knowledge of the following areas:
a. System and/or network administration;
b. Internet technology services, applications and protocols;
c. Network applications and services;
d. Programming and scripting languages;
e. ICT operations;
f. General security or information assurance principles;
g. Cyber security threats, attack types, vulnerabilities and exploit methodologies;
h. Incident response/handling methodologies, categories, procedures;
i. Penetration testing principles, tools and techniques;
j. Vulnerability handling/management;
k. Honeypots and related technologies;
l. Tools: SIEM, IDS/IPS, netflow analysis, protocol analysis, vulnerability assessment, log aggregation, event correlation.
- Demonstrable working experience in cybersecurity-related positions (e.g. SOC analyst) and ISO (International Standards Organisation) 2700x will be advantageous.
