Role details:
To provide services ensuring the availability and day-to-day operation, scheduling and technical support of the technical infrastructure/ computer systems and peripherals in the Data Centre environment

Business Analysis
•Work together with other employees and clients/users to investigate and model business functions, processes, information flows and data structures, using methodical and consistent techniques
•Investigate, in a team effort with other employees and clients/users, operational requirements and problems in order to contribute to improvements in information systems, data management, processes/procedures, organisation and equipment
•Work together with other employees and clients/users in specifying information flows, processes/procedures and data objects that will meet the business requirements of both BCX and the client
•Document work using BCX’s required standards, methods and tools
•Participate in client meetings and assist in presenting issues and solutions through oral and written communication


Capacity Management
•Frequently assist in planning and monitoring utilisation and capacity for current and proposed systems, including changes, by performing defined tasks
•Successfully assist in investigating, diagnosing and resolving problems as and when directed
•Maintain a good understanding of the disposition and capacity of installed system components and the capacity and performance implications of their inter-working
•Always selects appropriately from available tools and techniques to fulfil requirements, in alignment with BCX’s standards, to generate accurate information for measuring, estimating, planning and tuning capacity
•Constantly maintain an awareness of existing and future service commitments and the configuration designs associated with them


Conduct Research
•Agree with research goals and build on appropriate outline ideas for research, i.e. evaluation, development, demonstration and implementation.
•Report, through both oral and written communication, on work executed and contribute significant sections of material that is of publication quality
•Frequently search technical literature, read relevant articles and gain an up-to-date knowledge of any relevant field within information systems
•Regularly makes useful contributions to technical “brainstorming” sessions
•Acquire a deep knowledge and understanding of the research field(s) being studied
•Organise a personal archive of relevant material in an efficient and effective manner in accordance with any standards or procedures in force


Change Management
•Effectively assist with the production of schedules of requests for change (RFC) for managing changes to the live infrastructure
•Successfully transcribe data on to the change management database, ensuring accuracy and consistency of data
•Perform simple enquiries on the status of changes, using the change database where appropriate
•Frequently contact clients/users (for whom change management service is provided) to raise queries and provide information, entering details on to the client/user database where appropriate
•Circulate change documentation to a defined distribution of clients/users


Data Analysis Within A Project Environment
•Investigate application data requirements, documenting them according to the required BCX standards utilising the prescribed methods and tools
•Apply data analysis and data modelling techniques, based upon a detailed understanding of the business process, to establish, modify or maintain a data structure and its associated components (entity descriptions, relationship descriptions, attribute definitions)
•Lead the development and maintenance of project data standards, which may include the adoption and possible extension of corporate data standards through the appropriate procedures


Data Analysis Within A (Non-Project) Corporate Environment
•Assist in the investigation of corporate data requirements, documenting them according to the required standards utilising the prescribed methods and tools
•Apply data analysis and data modelling techniques, based upon a general understanding of the corporate information requirements, to establish, modify or maintain a data structure and its associated components (entity descriptions, relationship descriptions, attribute definitions)
•Assist in the development and maintenance of corporate data standards


Documentation/Technical Authoring
•Effectively acquire information about users and information systems by handling the actual products, reading technical specifications created by development staff, and interviewing development, sales, marketing and support staff
•Successfully design, with assistance from senior employees, individual documentation plans for those documentary items which occur in one’s own area of responsibility
•Create drafts for the review of items for which individual document plans exist as and when required
•Organise reviews of draft material in order to ensure they are in alignment with BCX’s standards
•With reference to senior employees, consolidate comments from reviews (technical, editorial, commercial) and prepare further drafts as and when necessary
•Manage the configuration of documentary items and documentation project files, within one’s own area of responsibility in alignment with BCX’s policies and procedures


Porting/Software Integration
•Assist in the configuration of software and equipment for the systems testing of platform specific versions of one or more software products
•Assist in the systems testing of platform specific versions of the software product(s)
•Document any faults that occur during systems testing and implement effective resolutions
•Conduct retesting in order to ensure alignment with agreed standards


Systems Testing
•Interpret and execute a set of more complex test plans using agreed methods and standards
•Document test failures and successes compared with pre-determined criteria, in alignment with agreed standards
•Report test results to supervisor and/or other employees in a clear and concise manner


Sales Support
•Provide clients with advice and guidance on the features, operational requirements, integration and portability of systems, products and services for which support is provided
•Assist in devising effective solutions to clients' defined requirements for new and enhanced systems, products and services
•Effectively demonstrate, install and commission hardware/software systems, products and services and their upgrades according to BCX’s standards
•Diagnose and resolve straightforward problems in alignment with BCX’s policies and procedures
•Regularly provide clients with information on updates, known errors, changes in availability, new facilities, etc


User Support
•Assist in the solving of business problems by providing detailed personal advice and guidance to all levels of users in the expert use of systems, products and services available to them
•Always demonstrate ingenuity in applying knowledge to complex and non-standard situations
•Successfully assist users experiencing difficulties in using information systems, products or services, including situations referred upwards by more junior staff, investigating complex situations to diagnose underlying causes
•Effectively implement known on-site solutions and workarounds and assist users to recover and continue operation
•Provide an effective interface between users and service providers for all requests that cannot be directly resolved
•Use judgement in applying guidelines for setting priorities for resolution, monitoring progress, and applying escalation procedures for problems that are not progressing satisfactorily
•Continually handle all complaints efficiently and professionally
•Propose, discuss and evaluate potential solutions with service providers and implement agreed field modifications or workarounds in alignment with BCX’s policies and procedures
•In consultation with users, demonstrate all features, plan requirements, install (including field modification) and commission desk-top systems, products and services and their upgrades

Project Office
•Develop and maintain generic project management standards, processes and procedures
•Support the setting up of individual project processes and procedures at all times
•Constantly support the use of planning, estimating, tracking and risk analysis tools and techniques
•Provide generic and specific support for the development and content of business cases, project plans, and review and audit reports.
•Evaluate project performance in alignment with BCX’s standards and recommend changes where performance is found to be unsatisfactory

Job Requirements -

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
•Grade 12, NQF Level 4, plus higher relevant qualification, diploma or degree NQF Level 5 or 6
•IBM Redbook residency – advantage
•AIX Certification
•Z-Series Certification
•OPEN Systems SAP Hana Enterprise Cloud support exposure


Previous Experience:
•5 - 8 years applicable experience as systems engineer
