Job purpose:

Responsible for leading a team that evaluates, install, test, integrate, maintain, analyse, design, modify, monitor and automate the IBM Information Server environment in large complex enterprise environments.
The DS Application Support Specialist will ensure system improvements are successfully implemented.

This includes:

Providing 24x7 3rd level operational support for all IIS environments;
performing Information Server software installation and configurations;
performing IIS monitoring and process improvements; implementing Information Server software installation and interface processes;
performing Information Server system and application problem determination;
performing Information Server program product and interface software installations;
providing on-going Disaster Recovery support;
working to provide a common development framework and environment for project development and maintenance activities;
performing administration, development, maintenance and communication of configuration management and infrastructure-related tools, utilities, processes, and procedures;
work with vendors and client to collaborate on technical problems to reduce time to solve technical or operational issues.

The DS Application Support Specialist will perform in-depth analysis, problem resolution, and design review of the highest-level technical issues.

This includes:

Providing technical consultation and support to Infrastructure and development teams, Enterprise Architecture, System Engineering with respect to Information Server;
providing 3rd tier support as required and acting as an escalation point for all unresolved issues for support.

The DS Application Support Specialist will work on issues involving and impacting leading edge and/or future technologies and business issues to accomplish both short-term and long-term business objectives.

This includes:

Staying updated with new technologies used with Information Server best practices;
partnering long-range strategic planning and performing operational aspects of Information Server implementations to support business requirements; participating in cross-functional project teams to help solve issues involving Information Server, CDC, and other interfaces.

The DS Application Support Specialist will guide the successful completion of (Information Server) DataStage upgrades and/or migrations and may function in a project leadership role. This includes:

Consulting with project engineers/managers to ensure technology is appropriately deployed and utilized in delivering services to our clients;
supporting implementation of new Information Server program products and interfaces;
participating as a subject matter expert in enterprise-wide technology programs having an impact on operating and system environments; and performing other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Engage with various other IT Shared support teams such as AIX and DB2 support to ensure that the DS application integration operates optimal and efficient.

Key responsibilities:

Ensure that all IIS environments are operating at an optimal level
Stop/start of the application servers.
Monitor the logs and take appropriate action to improve.
Setting up Security (internal registry and external registry such as LDAP), assigning roles, project permissions etc.
Create/Delete projects, create/modify environmental parameters. multiple APT_CONFIG_FILE
Monitor the server for I/O usage, memory usage, CPU usage, network usage, storage usage and take appropriate actions.
Kill or remove file locks, job locks, shared memory locks, specific processes or users. Remove unwanted files.
Apply the necessary patches to application platforms.
Ensure application system backups (engine, services and repository) have taken place successfully.
Plan and test application system recovery.
Report system issues and work with support services to ensure resolution.
Monitor job performance (as opposed to system performance) using Resource Estimator and Performance Manager and use the results to optimise parallelism and advise developers on long running jobs.
Deploy jobs / projects from development to production according to change control procedures.
Manage the job schedules in conjunction with source systems administrators.
Issue resolution.
Compiling of process documentation.
Automate scripts and processes where appropriate to reduce human error.

Key performance measures:

Ensure that all DS applications are up and working.
Provide operational support for DS applications.
Ensure all Application Servers and workstations are using an acceptable software version.
Manage all Applications access requests, permission and privileges.
Regular reboot of applications services.
Perform clean-up of environments
Ensure regular backups and assist with restore where appropriate.
Create application projects based on various requirements.
Apply various DS parameters based on various requirements.
Engage, collaborate and co-ordinate with other IT support teams to ensure DS applications are not negatively impacted.

Internal and external relationships:

Liaison with Developers, DS Production team, Business users, and other GTI support teams (DB2, AIX, etc.) and vendor technical support.

Knowledge:

Banking experience.
Degree or Diploma in I.T and the required Certification with 8 to 10 years related experience
In-depth knowledge of Data Warehouse best practices.
Knowledge and technical appreciation of the interconnectivities and interfaces between various technical platforms, operating systems and processes.
Good understanding of data ITIL
Must understand the need to align the IT and business strategies.
Data Eco knowledge, data creativity, data passion, data innovation.
Commercially minded
Technology savy

Experience:

Understanding of Data Warehousing.
Understanding of the IBM IIS architecture.
Understanding of Backup and Recovery.
Exposure in Teradata, IBM IIS, Cognos, MS Sql and UMR applications.
Broad and in-depth exposure to all facets of Data warehouses (such as development work, Production, DBA work and BI) would be an advantage.
Good understanding of database administration such as DB2
Good understanding of operating systems such as Unix and AIX

Ambiguity – a bad design will result in an implementation that is not acceptable. All ambiguities must be identified and resolved as quickly as possible.
Probability – the probability of batch running over batch window must always be questioned in order that they can be dealt with pro-actively (query performance).
