Job Description
Amazon Web Services in Cape Town, South Africa, is looking for an experienced engineering leader to help us define and build the future of computing. The AWS Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) service delivers computing capacity on-demand, with customers ranging from startups to well-known enterprises. As a member of the EC2 team in Cape Town you'll join other outstanding product and engineering leaders to work hard, have fun, and create the future of cloud computing.
We are looking for a broad technical leader who will own and drive development and engineering excellence across major components of EC2. You will have strong ownership over creating new systems and evolving existing systems including product definition, engineering development and operations, team development, and scaling the business. You'll work closely with a tight, agile team that ships and you will be able to see the impact your work has on real customers. And you will assist with the execution of site-wide cross-organizational responsibilities like site expansion, compliance and governance.
As a Director of Software Development, you will part of the larger technical leadership community at Amazon, and you will interact with all levels of the AWS and Amazon.com businesses. This community forms the backbone of the company, and plays a critical role in the broad business planning. You will work closely with senior executives to set and deliver against business targets, you will have regular opportunities to influence our long-term technical and business strategy, and you will be expected to help us build talented teams of engineers and ultimately enable them to deliver innovative new solutions rapidly.
The ideal candidate will be excited about the incredible opportunity cloud computing represents and will be passionate about building great teams that deliver high quality services. You believe your customers come first, and you enjoy working in a fast paced environment that requires strong technical and business judgment and great communication skills.
Your key responsibilities will include:
· Management of multiple engineering organizations, including hiring and developing, best-of-class engineering leaders across multiple teams and disciplines.
· Driving software development practices and software architectures that support ambitious delivery time-frames and a high quality bar.
· Defining and measuring service availability and performance, and acting quickly and decisively to resolve customer-impacting issues.

Qualifications· Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent.
· Strong technical credentials, with at least 10 years of experience managing software development teams, ideally with a rapid career progression from software engineer to engineering manager to leader of engineering leaders.
· Strong analytic and quantitative analysis skills.
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience successfully recognizing, recruiting and developing technical talent.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences.
· Demonstrated ability to formulate data driven decisions that lead to results.
· Demonstrated ability to deliver large, cross-functional initiatives spanning multiple organizations.
· Demonstrated ability to deliver high quality technology solutions in a high growth environment where priorities shift rapidly.
