Role details:
PURPOSE STATEMENT:

• To define the technology solution for the Data and Analytics (D&A) environment and ensure that it is designed to meet current and anticipated future technological requirements.
• To assist with and oversee the creation of comprehensive technical specifications from business requirements by maintaining a high level of in-depth knowledge with regards to D&A and other relevant Back-End Systems and data sources.

KEY TASKS:

7.1 Technical design of the Managed Data Estate / BI solution
• Collaborate with Data and Analytics teams and management to devise a data approach and architecture that addresses business requirements
• Build an inventory of data needed to implement the architecture
• Research new opportunities for data acquisition
• Identify and evaluate current data management technologies to assess applicability to the D&A environment and business.
• Create a fluid, end-to-end vision for how data will flow through an organization
• Develop data models for database structures
• Design, document, construct and deploy database architectures and applications (e.g. large relational databases)
• Integrate technical functionality (e.g. scalability, security, performance, data recovery, reliability, etc.)
• Implement measures to ensure data accuracy and accessibility
• Constantly monitor, refine and report on the performance of data management systems
• Meld new systems with existing warehouse structures
• Produce and enforce database development standards
• Maintain a corporate repository of all data architecture artefacts and procedures

7.2 Planning and dependency management
• Attend all project kick-off sessions to determine D&A involvement and dependencies.
• Be involved in taking key technology decisions at various stages in the project.
• Use communication skills to ensure that everyone in the team understands where the solution is heading and the roadmap to get there.
• Assist in translating project objectives to stories that can be prioritised and tracked according to Capitec Bank’s Way of Work.

7.3 Delivery and development of best-practice data architecture standards, policies and procedures.
• Work in close collaboration with developers to ensure that the different parts of a solution are integrated and appropriate technology choices are made
• Work with business analysts and business owners to ensure that the system evolves to meet emerging business requirements
• Provide the overall cohesiveness to ensure that all the components of the envisaged solution will fit together
• Participate in the development of product architecture and design
• Present documentation according to agreed standard and format, including:
• Data sources,
• Data warehouse, and
• System architecture design and documentation
• Participate in architecture activities between various development centres (database, D&A and BI centres)
• Provide guidance and direction in choice of tools and technical architectures
• Drafting and maintaining of all technical specifications related to the D&A environment
• Assist developers with compilation and execution of unit test plans and integration testing
• Work with the UAT team to ensure the smooth transfer of code from Development to UAT
• Continuous monitoring and evaluation of practice within the guild and data and analytics in order to maintain standards.
• Ensure on-time delivery of code
• Assist and execute the investigation and fixing of production issues
• Ensure that technologies are employed with best practice
• Levels II & III:
• Review quality of code produced by D&A team; ensure team delivery meets business critical requirements
• Approve the development of product architecture and design
• Ensure D&A team adhere to the Data Warehouse DPLC
? Workshop functional requirements with the Business Analysts to ensure full understanding of the business requirements
? Set quality design standards for development / architecture
• Coordinate and oversee the investigation and fixing of production issues
• Continuous business and industry research to guide the critical evaluation of architectural and design patterns & principles.
7.4 Support for client requirements through technical readiness
• Provide technical, business and delivery support a specific competency area
• Continuous research on and stay abreast of:
• Best practices related to the D&A environment, architectural and design patterns & principles
• New technology development related to the D&A environment (i.e. MS SQL, Database servers, Source control tools, Testing tools, Bug tracking tools, etc.)
• Initiate proof-of-concept projects on new tools or architectures that will be used in subsequent projects
• Critically review / evaluate new technologies / security principles
• Ensure that trends in IT (specifically BI and D&A) market are known and ensure that strategies are in place to react to these new trends
• Levels II & III:
• Provide technical, business and delivery consultative leadership for a specific competency area
• Take a lead within the team to prescribe best practice and ensure compliance to Capitec Bank data governance and other related policies.


Level differentiators:

Data Architect Level I
• Grade 12
• A relevant 3 year tertiary qualification (degree / diploma) and at least 2 years’ proven experience within management information systems & implementation and design using existing data patterns.
OR
• At least 2 - 4 years’ proven experience within management information systems / system analysis plus industry certification e.g. DAMA, AWS, / DMBOK2.

Works at a level in which the processes are defined and decision making is restricted to the procedures. Uses set and established data patterns and concepts under the guidance of Levels II & III.
Experience on the job is necessary to enable the incumbent to use limited initiative and make satisfactory decisions about unforeseen circumstances.
Experience on the job is also necessary to understand the complexity of the environment.

Data Architect Level II
• Grade 12
• A relevant 3 year tertiary qualification (degree / diploma) and at least 4 years’ proven experience within management information systems / systems analysis, implementation and design including creating new data patterns.
OR
• At least 2 - 4 years’ proven experience within management information systems / system analysis plus industry certification e.g. DAMA, AWS, / DMBOK2.
AND
Industry certification such as DAMA, AWS, DMBOK2.
• Contributes to the function and organisation through technical expertise, knowledge and skills on a Value Stream and D&A level; optimises concepts and patterns.

Knowledge shares; guides and mentors junior Data Architects. At this level the role helps interpret and execute functional business plans and influence delivery plans.
Contribute to the exploration and sourcing of new technology and tools and techniques to improve and optimise performance and delivery.

Required to remain cognisant of non-functional requirements data accuracy, stability, accessibility and security at all times.

Data Architect III (Industry title: Enterprise Data Architect)
• Grade 12
• A relevant 3 year tertiary qualification (degree / diploma) and at least 6 years’ proven experience within management information systems / systems analysis/ implementation and design including creating and evaluating new data patterns.
AND
Industry certification such as DAMA, AWS, DMBOK2.

Contributes to the organisation through specialist expertise, knowledge and skills on an enterprise wide level.
Provides technical expertise, support and training and development to other Data Architects & Data Engineers in the function as well as across the organisation.
Provides oversight of technical standards, including sign off of designs.
Responsible for delivery and alignment of data standards and practices across D&A to prevent duplication of work and inefficiencies in the data estate.
Required to operate autonomously and independently (stand-alone).
The type of work is similar to levels I and II but the complexity level and scope are greater; improves & originates, innovates and optimises processes and technology and adopts a proactive, initiating approach.
