Temporary Junior Lecturer: Computer and Digital Systems / Machine Learning and Data Engineering (Three-year term appointment)

The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Stellenbosch University offers leading educational and research programmes in the fields of computer and control systems as well as machine learning and data engineering. A limited number of Senior Lecturer/Lecturer/Junior Lecturer positions have recently become available in the Department in these fields. The Department is therefore looking for excellent candidates to fill these positions. The Department has well-established research laboratories as well as teaching and engineering infrastructures in these fields.

This is a three-year contract appointment with the possibility to extend the appointment after three years. It is expected of successful candidates who do not have PhD qualifications, to enrol for PhD studies and obtain the degree within a reasonable amount of time.

Duties:

- Lecturing general undergraduate modules and of undergraduate and postgraduate modules in specialised computer and digital systems / machine learning and data engineering;
- Supervising final year projects and postgraduate (Master’s) students in the fields of computer and digital systems / machine learning and data engineering;
- Performing basic and/or applied research focused on relevant research areas within the field of computer and digital systems / machine learning and data engineering;
- Collaborating with new and existing research partners within the Department;
- Performing supporting, administrative and representative roles within and outside the Department.

Requirements:

- An applicable Bachelor’s degree (such as BEng) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, as recognised by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), to qualify for registration as a Professional Engineer;
- An appropriate Master’s degree (typically MEng or MScEng) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from a recognised academic university;
- Comply with the requirements to register as a PhD student in the Department, or is currently registered as a PhD student, in the fields of computer and digital systems / machine learning and data engineering;
- The ability to communicate clearly in at least English and to teach courses and modules as described under the duties above;
- Outstanding academic record and evidence of a research record in the fields of computer and digital systems / machine learning and data engineering.

Recommendations:

- Appropriate industry experience;
- Registration as a Professional Engineer;
- A PhD degree from a recognised national or international tertiary institution, in the fields of computer and digital systems / machine learning and data engineering;
- Proven teaching experience is a strong recommendation;
- The ability to function in a multidisciplinary environment;
- A proven publication record.

Commencement of duties: 1 July 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter
