Server and Network Professional (Pay class 10)

The Graduate School of Business (GSB) has approximately 1000 IT users from its academic, in- company and executive education programmes. The nature of the GSB programmes is such that IT support is required at a high level 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and throughout the year. The GSB also owns and operates the IT Breakwater Lodge, a successful commercial Hotel, and GSB IT runs and manages the hotel’s IT systems. IT systems are therefore required to be fully functional at all times and this requires a speedy response to issues and service requests supported by a highly service orientated-approach by the GSB IT Support team.

The position requires a high level of competence in specific areas and the GSB reserves the right to practically test candidates for the required competencies.

This is a key hands-on, highly skilled position within GSB IT. It fulfils responsibilities that are critical to the ongoing provision of IT services to the GSB, the Breakwater Hotel and to their customers.

The high-level responsibilities of the position are:

• Managing servers (physical and virtual) and server software to ensure availability and reliability meet business requirements
• Managing e-mail services to ensure availability and reliability meet business requirements
• Managing effective software and patch management to ensure only authorized, secure software executes on the GSB networks and servers
• Managing anti-virus/spam to prevent any infestations that may cause significant downtime or loss of important GSB information and to keep spam levels within tolerable limits
• Ensuring server event monitoring (recognition, prioritization and response) is effective
• Ensuring network and server security ensures authenticated and authorized use of GSB IT resources
• Managing to ensure an effective wireless service
• Ensuring a tested disaster recovery plan ensures recoverability of all critical IT capabilities within target timeframes.

The critical nature of this position requires a high level of provable experience and ability in all of the following areas:

• In depth understanding of Microsoft server hardware and significant, proven, experience in the setup, configuration, monitoring and maintenance of Microsoft servers (including Exchange, SQL Server and ISA Server) and associated technologies
• In-depth knowledge and experience with DNS, DHCP, WINS, TCP/IP and related Microsoft protocols and systems
• In-depth knowledge and experience of configuring and maintaining VMWare infrastructure and systems
• In-depth knowledge and experience of configuring and maintaining Citrix Xen products a distinct advantage
• In-depth understanding and proven experience of Microsoft server and desktop patch management systems and operations
• Proven ability in installing, configuring and maintaining wireless networks and a good understanding of wired and wireless networks, protocols and installation and use of network adapters.
• Good experience in using network, as well as server monitoring software
• Proven ability to install, configure and maintain anti-virus and anti-spam products (and experience with trend products a distinct advantage)
• Have a very good understanding of Microsoft Server Security and good skills in the configuration and maintenance of Microsoft ISA Server
• Previous experience in disaster planning, backup and recovery (experience with Symantec products a distinct advantage).

The minimum requirements for this position are therefore:

• An IT-related tertiary qualification
• Relevant technical qualification such as Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE), specifically in current Windows Server technologies, VMWare and Citrix qualifications would be advantageous although proven experience matching the job requirements is of relatively more importance that theoretical knowledge.
• 8 years of related experience
• Excellent planning, analytical and problem-solving skills
• Have good written and communication ability
• Be prepared to provide standby service support after hours.


The annual cost of employment, including benefits is based on relevant experience and will be between R345 813 and R406 792.
