Master Artisan: Subtractive Manufacturing Laboratory

The Department of Industrial Engineering offers a strong undergraduate programme in Industrial Engineering and significant research activity in the areas of Engineering Management, Operations Management, Manufacturing, Systems Modelling, Machine Learning Applications, and Data Science.

In support of continuous growth, the Department needs to appoint a Master Artisan for the Subtractive Manufacturing Laboratory who is a Qualified Turner/Machinist or Toolmaker with extensive CNC and CAD/CAM experience and can provide a strong contribution in support of the manufacturing strategy.

Duties:

• Programming and operation of the following equipment (conversion training will be provided if required):
? Hermle C 40U 5-Axis Vertical Milling Machine;
? DMG MORI DMU 65 monoBlock 3-Axis Vertical Milling Machine.
• Quoting, planning and scheduling projects according to delivery deadlines and ensuring quality of scheduled projects;
• Supporting and participating in multiple undergraduate and postgraduate research and development projects related to manufacturing;
• Maintenance and OH&S management and procurement of related technological equipment and material;
• Updating and maintenance of related design and simulation software packages and computer equipment;
• Reporting on information needed for project reports and presentations;
• In future, the incumbent will be required to program and operate the following equipment (training will be provided if necessary):
? AgieCharmilles CA20 Wire EDM;
? AgieCharmilles SP3U EDM;
? DMG MORI CTX Beta 800 TC 5-Axis Turn-Mill.



Requirements:

• Qualified Turner/Machinist or Toolmaker for the past three years;
• MERSETA Red Seal Manufacturing-related certificates;
• A minimum of ten years’ experience in operation of 5-axis and 3-axis milling machines;
• A minimum of five years’ advanced CAD/CAM experience (PowerMill, FeatureCAM);
• The advanced ability to create 3D models using CAD software and the corresponding tool paths using CAM software along with advanced knowledge of G&M Codes (Fusion 360 or SOLIDWORKS);
• Experience in process safety management as defined by the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related regulatory bodies;
• Understanding of the machining properties of various metals and the proper selection of machining parameters and tools;
• Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing;
• Reading, interpreting, and working from engineering drawings;
• Experience in management and maintenance of technical assets;
• General computer skills such as MS Word and Excel;
• Good interpersonal skills, as well as sound written and verbal communication skills;
• The ability to function in a multilingual and multicultural environment.

Recommendations:

• NTIP Master Artisan Courses;
• Experience in client interaction and job quoting;
• A minimum of five years’ Siemens 840 & Heidenhain experience.
