Senior Moodle Developer for USB Executive Development (based in Cape Town office)

The University of Stellenbosch Business School Executive Development (Pty) Ltd, more commonly referred to as USB-ED, is a private company offering leadership and management development (short course) programmes across Africa for both corporates and individuals. USB-ED has a full time position for a Senior Moodle Developer reporting to the Commercial Director: Digital Learning. The successful candidate will be based in Cape Town (Bellville) or Johannesburg (Sandton). The appointee will be part of a dynamic Digital Learning team delivering high quality service to clients, the company and society.

Job purpose:

The Senior Moodle Developer will be responsible for the provision of technical development and support across a range of applications within the Moodle LMS. Working in a diverse and rapidly expanding development team, the Developer requires strong technical, analytical, problem-solving and conceptual skills,

USB-ED is looking to extend its use of the Moodle-based LMS across all its offerings, and as such this opportunity represents itself as a platform to work on and create world-class bespoke solutions. This position will perform a key role in creating and maintaining learning management systems based on Moodle and PHP, including design, configurations, branding and customisations. This position requires in depth experience in building enterprise level applications based on PHP Moodle in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications:

Applicants should have at least an undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification in Information Systems, Software development or a related field.

Work Experience:

• Moodle v3.2 or higher development experience
• 4+ years of experience in integrating plug-ins and writing new plug-ins to extend the Moodle system core features
• Proven experience with Moodle API and integration with third party systems
• 4+ years commercial development experience
• Proven experience of Articulate / other authoring software and proctoring
• Rest and XML RPC APIs
• Familiarity with the Microsoft stack
• Experience in Servers, Virtual Servers and Cloud Hosting and commissioning

Competencies and Skills:

• Must be output driven with a strong sense of accountability.
• Be familiar with distance and online education
• Be familiar with using learning management systems
• Have a working knowledge of the South African higher education regulatory framework
• Must be able to work within pre-determined time frames and deadlines
• Excellent communication skills, including presentation and report writing skills
• Must be a collegial team player
• Have a strong customer focus
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Power Point, Access, Internet and Email)
• Possess a high level of ethics and confidentiality

Additional requirements:

• Must be willing to work outside hours in order to meet deadlines
• Must be able to travel (JHB – Cape Town)
• Positive outlook, seeing beyond obstacles
• Passion for tech including best practices, methodologies, standards and design patterns
• Excellent communication skills, both technical and non-technical
• Proven track record of building and delivering complex and highly transactional systems.
• Desire for continual learning
• Candidates will be expected to provide proof of current or completed projects and Moodle designs and will be required to do a practical “Sandbox” test as part of the selection process
