Job Purpose:The Design Lead has a broad view of product and service design and a thorough understanding of complex service ecosystems. A deep knowledge of delivery platforms, cutting edge technology developments and the marketplace are essential. They contribute to and own the Design Language from both an interaction and visual perspective.
Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
- Custodian of the SBGMobile Design Strategy
- Structuring and shaping of the SBGMobile Design Team
- Direct Line Management Responsibility of Design Team including UX, Visual and Web Designers
- Directly responsible for maintaining the integrity of the SBG Mobile Design Language across all SBGMobile initiatives
- Have an opinion of and be up to date with technological advances.
- The ability to articulate the story to clients.
- Demonstrate an understanding of device/ecosystem platforms.
- Directly responsible for the creative quality and innovation of the solutions that they are overseeing, as well as stakeholder and team satisfaction.
- Inspire innovative approaches to design, using creative facilitation techniques and taking the lead at stakeholder meetings, internal meetings, brainstorms and external design events.
- Develop thought leadership as part of the overall design leadership team at SBGMobile.
- Keep up to speed with new technological developments applicable to SBGMobile’s service design core.
- Be the custodian of the SBGMobile Style guide, ensuring it is updated and accessible
- Manage and mentor junior members of a growing Design team
- Maintain subject matter leadership and professional development through active participation in global or local Interaction Design community groups
- Responsible for intra-divisional collaboration with others within the company's user experience community to ensure a cohesive and strategic user experience across the division. Networks with key internal and external contacts outside own area of expertise on technical matters and prototype designs.
- Drives decision-making around pattern selection for design pattern libraries based on professional knowledge and understanding of usability issues and best practices. Drives improvements and changes in designs and gives professional appraisal on implementation of the design as planned and/or executed.
- Frequently presents design concepts and deliverables to the project team, as well as internal and external stakeholders. Leads internal and external design reviews, and presents design concepts to senior management when needed.
- Line Management Responsibility for Design Team
- Recruitment of new resources to the Design Team when required
- Working with cross-functional teams to create innovative user experiences for new and extended product/service offerings
- Performing user research and task analysis and translate findings into design inputs
- Creating information architectures, user interaction models, Low and High fidelity prototypes and style guidelines
- Designing user interfaces for web, desktop and mobile applications
- Drive HF improvements across teams who are directly indirectly connected
Preferred Qualification and Experience:
- A BA/BSc User-centered design or advanced design degree is a must
- At least 7-10 years of experience as a design leader, guiding teams and designing outstanding web-based product solutions for a consumer oriented site
- 5 - 7 years of experience designing workflows, interactions and user interfaces for interactive applications on different screens and devices.
- 7 years line management experience of medium to large development teams
- 4 years’ experience as a technical and application architect
- 7 years banking industry experience
- Experience with Lean UX models and agile workflows strongly preferred• Experience working with ecommerce domains is a plus
- Strong proficiency in Adobe CS. Proficiency in front-end coding, HTML/DHTML/XML, CSS/CSSX, Dreamweaver, Ajax, Flash, Silverlight, and scripting languages a plus
- Proven experience in driving complex design issues across multidisciplinary groups such as development, test, program management, other designers and research.
- Expertise in leading national and international projects
- Experience of leading complex design projects
- Experience in driving and institutionalize design in corporate setup
- Ideally, experience in a consulting organization, from strategy through execution, and the ability to facilitate and lead a customer through several day workshops.
- Ideally you have worked within an agile development team, alongside agile software developers
Knowledge/Technical Skills/Expertise:
- Knowledge of prevalent development practices, techniques and tools
- Exceptional understanding of fundamental design principles (typography, layout, grid systems, hierarchy, color, composition).
- Industry knowledge pertinent to portfolio
- Strong command of interaction and visual design capabilities
- Standard Bank business direction and current status
- Good understanding of prototyping tools - PowerPoint, Axure, iRise or Balsamic
- Deep knowledge, passion and expertise in your field
- Knowledge in Usability Engineering & UXD Methods
- Unconscious competence in the appropriate software tools required of a creative
Competencies:
- Proficiency in Adobe products like Photoshop, Illustrator.
- Workshop planning and facilitation skills.
- Possess solid presentation skills to effectively deliver your approach to stakeholders and senior management
- Excellent visualization skills
- Able to work with technology experts to ensure that your design informs technology, and that technology informs your design
- Information design skills to map out complex ideas.
- Hands on design skills - be able to create organized information architecture maps, demonstrate knowledge of UCD methodology, and visualize your designs under a tight schedule through storyboards, wireframes, task flows, mock ups, and prototypes to meet each stage of development
- Strong interaction design skills as well as visual design skills and strong grasp of English language in order to create simple content flows.
- Excellent skills in Adobe CS Suite (Photoshop, Fireworks, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, etc.)
