The Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics is one of the largest departments in the Science Faculty at the University of Cape Town, with more than 30 academic staff, more than 10 administrative staff, and more than 50 postgraduate students.

We are looking for a dynamic and motivated person to fill this position. The Chief Technical Officer has the overall responsibility for all IT needs of the department, and this is a high level position that requires technical expertise as well as interpersonal skills, and the ability to prioritise and manage time effectively.

Requirements:

- A minimum of 3 years’ experience working in IT,
- a Matric certificate (or equivalent),
- a working knowledge of computer hardware and software,
- Linux experience,
- a strong customer service ethic,
- good communication skills,
- being able to work under pressure,
- the ability to complete assigned tasks timeously,
- the ability to work both in a team as well as independently, as required,
- to meet at least three out of the criteria listed below:

The following will be advantageous:

- Computer science BSc degree or certification as engineer for some Unix system; experience installing and configuring Windows, Linux and Mac desktops;
- experience with installing and maintaining web servers (apache, html, php, sql, etc); experience with a broad range of networking technologies;
- programming experience (e.g. shell, perl, python, c, c++, javascript);
- excellent knowledge and experience with LaTeX, Matlab, Mathematica or other mathematical software;
- experience with web learning software.

Responsibilities:

- Overall responsibility for IT infrastructure (hardware and software), web servers (linux),
- the maintenance of computer labs, security camera system, databases, data backups,
- the co-management of the IT budget, and liaison with the university’s ICTS.
- the duties also include high level user support and training (if not covered by ITCS) and sometimes software development tasks.

The annual cost of employment, including benefits (where applicable), is R370 020 – R435 267.
