System Support Specialist

A vacancy exists for a System Support Specialist at the Stellenbosch Campus IT Hub and the Tygerberg Campus User Support respectively. Candidates should specify which position they are applying for or whether they wish to apply for both.

Duties:

- Computer support and training for University staff and students;
- Recommendations on and standards for computer, software and applications for the University;
- Installing, configuring and upgrading Microsoft/Linux/iOS and Android operating systems and applications, as well as third party software specific to departments;
- Installation, configuration and debugging of computer-related equipment;
- Presentations, technical training and workshops for colleagues, staff and students of the University;
- Assisting with the compilation of self-help guides to help colleagues and users resolve their own computer-related issues;
- Staying in touch with the latest technologies and trends with ongoing research, experimentation and self-study;
- Resolving and documenting assignments and tasks according to specified guidelines and standards;
- Configuring, administrating and documenting the network infrastructure and components.

Requirements:

- A two-year, computer-related qualification OR computer-related training (e.g. A+, MCSE, MCITP, etc.);
- At least three years’ experience in computer user support;
- Good understanding of computer architecture and network technology;
- Ability to solve computer-related problems independently and practically;
- Ability to function in a team as well as independently, in a self-motivated and confident manner;
- Ability to empower team members and users by sharing knowledge and solutions in order to streamline workflow;
- Effective time management skills and the ability to prioritise scheduled and unscheduled tasks;
- Ability to perform well under pressure in a dynamic environment;
- Willingness and availability to perform after-hour standby tasks for additional remuneration.
