Information Technology is a service division of the University that enables the University to reach its goals by using information and communication technology in an optimal manner.

Information Systems is a division of IT that is responsible for establishing and operating the larger institutional information systems, such as the Student, Human Resources and Financial systems. In addition, systems for research and teaching are also supported, such as the Moodle learning management system.

Duties:

• Supporting learning technologies as a team member;
• development in PHP, JavaScript, and related web technology, primarily the Moodle and Google platforms;
• problem management: log problems and do error analysis; ensure that incidents and problems with eLearning system and related systems are analysed and resolved, according to ITIL standards; liaise with service departments, suppliers and IT technical staff to ensure that problems are resolved;
• supporting staff regarding use of learning technologies in the classroom, such as video streaming, podcasting and clicker use;
• operations: ensure that the learning technology systems (including eLearning system, video streaming, content management and interpretation) operate optimally, including the year-to-year transition modules on the eLearning system platform; understand and assist with automation of user administration on the platforms;
• reporting: provide monthly management information on the use and operation of the platforms;
• technology reconnaissance: examine relevant developments; provide training to IT and Teaching and Learning Enrichment staff in the relevant technology;
• determining and documenting needs: understand user needs and processes and write specifications for new systems as well as enhancements to existing systems;
• liaison and coordination within IT to ensure that systems are developed according to IT architecture standards and integrated with the other systems of the University.

Requirements:

• Excellent knowledge of Information and Communication Technology and an understanding of the learning process:
o a relevant NQF 7 qualification such as a degree in Computer Science, Information Science or Engineering; and
o at least two years’ applicable ICT experience;
• experience in scripting and programming languages such as PHP, JavaScript features;
• familiar with web technology (HTML, XML, CSS);
• Linux knowledge and experience;
• database and SQL knowledge and experience;
• proven knowledge of or experience in the use of information and information systems to improve processes or solve problems;
• proven analytical abilities;
• good communication abilities with proven verbal and written reporting skills;
• good understanding of a university and the functioning thereof;
• good interpersonal skills;
• ability to function independently as well as within a team;
• ability to operate under pressure.

Recommendations:

• A degree in Information Science or Computer Science or Engineering;
• two or more years’ service at a university;
• knowledge of video technology;
• PC hardware expertise;
• knowledge of the Moodle eLearning system.
