ICT Solutions Engineer: End point systems

About the job:
The CSIR has a vacancy for a Solutions Engineer who will design, engineer and implement integrated ICT infrastructure solutions and provide specialized support services. This position is based in Pretoria.

Key responsibilities:

- Provide consultancy services as part of a multidisciplinary team of specialized technical experts into interpreting and translating user, operational or business requirements;
- Assist in clarifying client requirements in the light of known technologies and solutions currently available or under development;
- Research and evaluate technologies and/or combinations of technologies that will culminate in conceptual solutions and submit recommendations on the best fit-for-purpose conceptual solutions;
- Develop design (functional, performance, etc) specifications and integrating interfaces/components for approved conceptual solutions;
- Recommend specific equipment, specifications and relevant software required to ensure that the design specifications are met or exceeded;
- Provide input to documentation (business cases, project proposals, etc.);
- Prepare and submit motivations and supporting documentation for the procurement of components required to ensure the delivery of approved solutions;
- Ensure that components of the solutions are assembled, installed, configured and integrated according to supplier and best practice standards;
- Lead ICT infrastructure projects or sub projects in accordance with the ICT and project management frameworks and guidelines;
- Stay abreast of the latest technological development in the relevant fields of ICT and provide recommendations on changes to architecture and technologies;
- Design all solutions to ensure appropriate integration or interfacing with the current and future ICT Infrastructure;
- Document solutions architecture and engineering design for approved and current systems/solutions;
- Ensure that the design, engineer, implementation and release of solutions comply with ICT project, change and release management frameworks;
- Monitor, report and provide recommendations on relevant and/or related technological and other changes in ICT that could impact ICT operations and the achievement of CSIR's vision and objectives;
- Provide specialized technical analysis and support to ensure effective internal and external services;
- Participate in the review and development of ICT standards, procedures and best practices;
- Provide guidance and technical leadership related to the integration of systems, the operation and configuration of ICT infrastructure;

Qualifications, skills and experience:

- Relevant industry certification(s) up to masters or equivalent level with at least eight years’ experience relevant to the specific speciality;
- A relevant Bachelor’s degree will be an advantage;
- Linux professional qualifications will be an advantage;
- Working experience on Service Management processes (Problem Management, Capacity Management, Service Design, Incident Management, Availability Management, Service continuity management, Release management, Configuration management, Information security management, Continuous improvement, Access management, Change Management, Transition planning and support.)
- Working experience with planning, engineering, implementation on integrated ICT Cloud-, Storage-, Unified Communications-, Collaboration-, Information security-, Open source-, Mobile- and Desktop Solutions;
- The ability to visualize, articulate, make decisions and solve complex problems and concepts;
- The ability to apply logical thinking to gathering and analysing information, designing, testing solutions and formulating plans;
- In depth technical knowledge of the specific engineering solution speciality;
- In depth technical knowledge of integration of the specific engineering solution speciality with other ICT disciplines;
- The ability to execute projects in compliance with sound project management methodology and excellent report writing skills;
- Excellent communication, presentation, leadership and people development skills;
- Expert at solving problems on Virtualisation solutions, Desktop Operating Systems (Open source and Proprietary), Web Services, Collaboration Services (e-mail and document management), mobile solutions, Information Security, and proxy services;
- Expert technical knowledge of the latest ICT Infrastructure and Operations disciplines and industry trends;
- Specialist knowledge and experience of Microsoft and Linux Operating Systems (SLES, OEL, Ubuntu);
- Specialist technical knowledge of the relevant architectures and technologies related to Virtualisation solutions, Desktop Operating Systems (Open source and Proprietary), Web Services, Collaboration services (e-mail and document management), mobile solutions, Information Security, and proxy services;
- Implementation, support knowledge and experience with the following disciplines and technologies:
1 Directory services, Architecture and Design
2 IT Systems audits and Computer equipment inventory management
3 Design and implementation of processes and procedures
