DevOps Engineer: OSS/Platform Engineering
 
Reports to: Principle Technical Lead                                                       
Job Function:
The DevOps Engineer position in the OSS/Platform Engineering team is responsible and accountable for maintaining hardware, operating systems and applications, as well as developing automated workflows and tooling from a system management and administration perspective. This includes, but is not not limited to, capacity and availabiility monitoring and response, alert management and filtering, risk & release management of operating systems and applications (patch management), automated deployment & configuration management using best of breed applications (i.e. Ansible, Chef, Puppet etc). The ideal candidate should have significant experience in developing tooling and applications within Linux based environments, and should be able to develop against existing scripts and web interface logic, as well as develop new applications to automate processes, facilitate new requirements and provide enhancements for current services and infrastructure. Candidates should also be able to demonstrate a knowledge of and familiarity with containerization technologies, and have experience in migrating applications from monolithic deployments to cloud technology stacks such as Docker, Kubernetes or OpenStack. The ability to architect complex, multi-faceted applications across cloud platforms is critical, with a strong emphasis placed on high availability. Experience with high concurrent programming languages such as Python 3 or Go would be advantageous, as would knowledge of unit, integration and functionality testing of software applications. The candidate should be extremely comfortable with securing operational systems, and be able to identify and deal with potential risks across the full suite of OSS/Platform Engineering’s infrastructure and services. Knowledge of and an interest in Site Reliability Engineering and the application thereof would also be advantageous, as would an interest in implementing preventative analytics, and the ability to resolve issues before they become critical or service impacting outages. The canidate will be office based, primarily in the location defined above. However necessary visits to various IS Data Centres locally and internationally will be required from time to time.
Main Duties and Responsibilities include:-
DevOps Engineer (Development and Operations Engineer)

Responsible and accountable for maintaining OSS/Platform Engineering infrastructure hardware, operating systems and services.
Developing against existing applications, with an eye toward migrating their functionality to newer technologies or platforms.
Configuration management of operating systems and applications, ensuring standards are defined and managed using the necessary tools provided (i.e. Puppet, Ansible).
Responsible and accountable for the monitoring and alerting of the entire OSS/Platform Engineering Infrastructure.
Managing risk and release through configuration management, patch management, and version control (i.e. Git).
Responsible for maintenance and administration of mission critical OSS/Platform Engineering systems.
Implement a process-based approach to meeting OSS/Platform Engineering’s organisational goals.
Provide a high degree of leadership through ownership and follow through of tasks.
Providing effort estimates on projects and prioritising own tasks effectively.
Ensuring that all activities performed are in compliance with The company’ Policies and Procedures.
Ensure that development and system administration follows guidelines & standards, and follow best practices.
Brainstorming and incubating new ideas with other team members.
Provide the necessary skills and experience to allow OSS/Platform Engineering to meet its goal of providing next-gen architecture and services to core business units across The company’ infrastructure across the continent.

Accountability

Ownership of projects and problems with effective self management.
Responsibility for the accurate forecasting of capacity requirements across annual timeframes.
Responsibility for the availability of services to within five 9’s.
The architecture of highly available services and applications to serve operational requirements.
Identification of and action on risks that could impact the security, stability or availability of OSS/Platform Engineering services.

Escalations

Ownership of critical issues escalated to OSS/Platform Engineering from any number of sources across the The company organization.
Raise awareness to line managers about potential issues arising from, but not limited to, delivery impediments on current projects, risks affecting OSS/Platform Engineering services, issues with services, networks or systems on which OSS/Platform Engineering relies.

Demonstrable knowledge and significant working experience of UNIX & Linux, preferably RedHat based operating systems, FreeBSD, as well as familiarity with Windows Server (required).
Demonstratable knowledge in programming languages (required).
Demonstratable knowledge in database architecture, both schema-based and schema-less (essential).
Demonstrable knowledge and significant working experience of Virtual environments (required).
Demonstrable knowledge and significant working experience of networking & TCP/IP (required).
Significant experience in system administration (required).

Experience in maintaining and administering critical systems (essential).
Server and blade technologies (essential).

Education/Qualifications:

LPIC 1 (desirable).
