12 month position based in the Western Cape,the company will regrettably not be covering candidates' relocation costs.This information management team member will have the primary responsibility for daily management and operation of the Linux servers and Linux-based information systems maintained by the team, and for planning their future expansion. This key team member will lead in the formulation and implementation of system wide policies to maximize the system’s effectiveness and ISO 14721 compliance, and will be responsible for ensuring the security of the system and of the information residing on it. S/he will also assist the team lead in selecting and implementing support for data ingest, storage and dissemination protocols.

Provide the highest reliability (uptime) and responsiveness of service in the Linux servers, LAN, and Information Management System. Proactively manage these systems and design them for future needs with assistance from the information management team.
Select, procure, and install hardware and software to improve the Linux and IMS systems’ reliability, responsiveness, and scientific utility. Provide robust technical advice on the configuration and support of system components and services. Conduct forward planning.
Supervise more junior system administrators and others with system privileges. Ensure that system logs are monitored and that anomalies are detected and responded to in a timely fashion. Provide regular reporting to team leads and senior management on the status of the system.
Lead and assist in the development of information systems policies and their implementation.
Provide support to scientists utilizing the system.

Education, Training, and Experience: Master’s degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering plus 5-8 years of documented experience building, configuring, and managing Linux systems or B.Sc. or Honours degree plus 10 years such experience.
Key competencies required
Linux system administration essential: familiarity with build, configuration and deployment of RHEL or Fedora or CentOS systems. Familiarity with other distributions such as Ubuntu a plus. Familiarity with network configuration and administration including BIND and DHCP. Knowledge of and experience with managing a secure system firewall (iptables).
Knowledge of good system security practices and common packages (ossec, Nagios, tripwire) and ability to implement these.
UNIX shell scripting bash, sh, csh, cron, and similar utilities.
Experience installing and tweaking, and occasionally building from source, a variety of software packages required to support mission. Experience with make, yum, rpm.
Experience implementing onsite virtualization (e.g., qemu, kvm).
Experience with programming and scripting languages Perl or Python, C or Fortran, Ruby, Java, javascript.
Experience with XML, HTML and web servers Apache, Tomcat? creating web sites and web pages.
Ability to contribute to devising and implementing policy for backup and failover scenarios.
Experience with implementing and managing a wiki (Twiki or similar).
Strong collaboration and problem solving skills.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Willingness to learn additional skills and teach others.
Additional competencies desired:
Experience with configuration management tools chef, puppet.
Experience with commercial, offsite cloud solutions such as AWS, dropbox, Google.
Experience with OSS and community collaboration e. g., GitHub, StackExchange, Sourceforge, Binstar? as evidence, please provide username(s).
Experience with implementing local GitHublike sites, such as gitorious or gitlab.
Experience executing at the technical level MOUs and SLAs regarding data sharing/exchange and data access with other institutions around South Africa and the world.
Additional recommended skills:
Experience with metadata aggregators: ESRI Geoportal server, CKAN, GeoNetwork or GeoNode.
Experience with installation and management of environmental data servers and services: OPeNDAP Hyrax, THREDDS, LAS, ERDDAP.
Knowledge of XSLT.
Skill with one or more standard XML editors
Familiarity with Google Earth and KML. 2
Experience with data management planning access levels, retention schedules, and disposition of data.
Experience with scientific data file formats such as: NetCDF, HDF, GRiB, BUFR.
