Mathematical Science

Senior Lecturer: Computer Science

The Mathematical Sciences Department is responsible for teaching and research in computer science, applied mathematics and mathematics at Stellenbosch University. The Computer Science Division aims to strengthen its existing research groups in machine learning and data science, artificial intelligence, automata theory, software engineering, and program analysis and verification, and is therefore keen to appoint a Senior Lecturer with a research background and publication record in these or closely related areas such as databases or programming languages. Duties:

- Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate Computer Science modules;
- Research and publication in one or more of the Division’s research focus areas;
- Supervision of postgraduate students;
- Administrative roles on a rotational basis.

Requirements:

- PhD in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or in a related field with a thesis topic in Computer Science or Data Science;
- Strong, growing academic publication record in recognised journals or conference proceedings, appropriate to the level of the position;
- Strong research background in (or closely related to) at least one of the Division’s research focus areas;
- Lecturing experience in Computer Science on tertiary level;
- Supervision experience of postgraduate students, appropriate to the level of the position; and
- Demonstrable excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

Recommendations:

- Successful postgraduate supervision on MSc and PhD level;
- Existing international research network;
- Existing current NRF rating; and
- Proof of existing financial research grants.

Commencement of duties: 1 January 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter
