Information Technology is a service division of the University that enables the University to reach its goals by using information and communication technology in an optimal manner.

Information Systems is a division of IT that is responsible for establishing and operating the larger institutional information systems, such as the Student, Human Resources and Financial systems. In addition, systems for research and teaching are also supported, such as the Moodle learning management system.

Duties:

• Management and planning of services, platforms and systems that support learning and teaching at the University;
• managing relations: between IT and divisions that provide a service to lecturers and students; ensure that the IT Learning Technology Systems team and Centre for Learning Technologies (CLT) staff work together as a team; build good relations with the Head: CLT;
• problem management: take ownership of problems; ensure that incidents and problems with the eLearning system and related systems are analysed and resolved, according to ITIL standards; liaise with service departments, suppliers and IT technical staff;
• operations: ensure that the eLearning and related platforms and systems (including video streaming, content management, language interpretation over Wi-Fi) are operated optimally, including the year-to-year roll over of modules on the eLearning platform; understand and assist with automation of user administration on the platforms; establish standards for technology in teaching and learning in collaboration with the IT architect and system administrators, as well as stakeholders such as the Centre for Learning and Teaching Enhancement and the computer lab managers;
• reporting: provide monthly management information on the use and operation of the platforms;
• technology reconnaissance: build a vision of Learning Technology and investigate relevant developments; advise IT as well as the management of Teaching and Learning Enrichment about the relevant technology;
• licence management: ensure that licences for the relevant platforms are properly managed with regard to licencing metrics and conditions; as well as budgeting and annual renewals;
• human resource management: manage staff and contractors that work in this division and report to the manager: Learning Technology Systems, including their development, training and performance management;
• determining and documenting needs: understand user needs and processes and write specifications for new systems as well as enhancements to existing systems;
• liaison and coordination within IT to ensure that systems are developed according to IT architecture standards and integrated with the other systems of the University.

Requirements:

• Excellent knowledge of Information and Communication Technology and an understanding of the learning process:
o a relevant NQF 8 qualification such as an Honours degree in Computer Science, Information Science, or a degree in Engineering; and
o at least four years’ applicable ICT experience;
• proven knowledge of or experience in the use of information and information systems to improve processes or solve problems;
• proven analytical abilities;
• good understanding of a university and it’s functioning;
• good communication abilities with proven verbal and written reporting skills;
• good interpersonal skills;
• ability to function independently as well as within a team;
• ability to operate under pressure.

Recommendations:

• A Master’s degree;
• a degree in Information Science or Computer Science or Engineering;
• four or more years’ service at a university;
• project management experience;
• knowledge of the Moodle eLearning system.
