Senior Technical Officer: Research

Duties:

• Supporting research-driven computer activities for research staff and postgraduate students in the Faculty of Science;
• hardware and software maintenance (Linux);
• development of systems software (Linux);
• network and capacity planning;
• development and maintenance of security strategy;
• development and maintenance of backup strategy;
• development and maintenance of support facilities.

Requirements:

• At least an Honours degree in Computer Science or an equivalent qualification;
• at least 3 years’ relevant experience in Linux system administration and setting up Linux client computers;
• extreme competence in the administration of Linux servers, including LDAP, NFS, DNS, DHCP, Exim, CUPS, Tomcat, Samba and Apache;
• knowledge about virtualisation in Linux systems;
• experience with the installation and maintenance of open source software;
• experience with the setup and maintenance of code repositories;
• experience with C, C++, Java, MySQL, PHP and Python programming (these skills will be tested);
• the ability to solve technical problems completely independently;
• excellent language and communication skills in Afrikaans as well as English;
• excellent interpersonal skills;
• good organisational skills;
• the ability to work neatly and with accuracy is of utmost importance.

Recommendations:

• A relevant Linux qualification;
• experience in a university or research environment;
• experience in the setup and management of scientific software experiments and cluster servers;
• experience with building physical electronic systems from components.
