Duties:
Supporting research-driven computer activities for research staff and postgraduate students in the Faculty of Science;
hardware and software maintenance (Linux);
development of systems software (Linux);
network and capacity planning;
development and maintenance of security strategy;
development and maintenance of backup strategy;
development and maintenance of support facilities.

Requirements: At least an Honours degree in Computer Science or an equivalent qualification;
at least 3 years relevant experience in Linux system administration and setting up Linux client computers;
extreme competence in the administration of Linux servers, including LDAP, NFS, DNS, DHCP, Exim, CUPS, Tomcat, Samba and Apache;
knowledge about virtualisation in Linux systems;
experience with the installation and maintenance of open source software;
experience with the setup and maintenance of code repositories;
experience with C, C++, Java, MySQL, PHP and Python programming (these skills will be tested);
the ability to solve technical problems completely independently;
excellent language and communication skills in Afrikaans as well as English;
excellent interpersonal skills;
good organisational skills;
the ability to work neatly and with accuracy is of utmost importance.
Recommendations:
A relevant Linux qualification;
experience in a university or research environment;
experience in the setup and management of scientific software experiments and cluster servers;
experience with building physical electronic systems from components.
