Role details:
The Solaris Systems and Storage Administrator is responsible for the day to day operational functions required to manage, maintain and continually improve the client’s server and storage environment. The goal is to create a stable and efficient environment for the client and meet and strive to improve service levels.

First level support for NetBackup

Symantec escalation and call management

Day to day systems and storage operations, administration and management :
Daily health checks
Creation, modification, deletion of user accounts, access control and security settings
Storage allocation, monitoring and modification from an operating system requirement
Operate and maintain storage environment (schedule, perform, and manage tasks and changes)
Network allocation, monitoring and modification from an operating system requirement
System resource utilisation, monitoring & exclusion reporting
Maintain and update system documentation
Maintain and update process and procedural documentation
Adherence to internal change control process and procedures
Adherence to prescribed naming conventions and if required, propose new ones
Updating system and application profiles based on change management requirements
Prescribing to call logging systems in terms of predefined service levels
Patch and microcode management within pre-defined intervals
Problem escalation and management internally or via 3rd party support
Operational engagement and communication with peripheral areas incl. Storage, Network, Database, Application, data centre management systems etc.
Implementation of automated operating tasks and functions where possible
Ensure correct microcode levels between peripherals and server environments
Support and maintenance of software for this environment
Provides management and support for the server and storage environment software including requests, questions, allocation, problem resolution, problem management and monitoring
Provide preventive maintenance
Capacity and Performance Management
Utilise the tools and software available at to manage capacity and performance
With the Remote Services reporting service, analyse monthly reports and produce a management report highlight any concerns and/or recommendations
On approval of the recommendations, in the case of our client's equipment, implement the recommendations
In the case on non client equipment, inform the relevant people responsible for the equipment of the concerns and recommendations for their consideration and implementation.
Problem and Change Management
Log, monitor progress, and ensure successful resolution of storage incidents
Submit requests for change according to the change management process for any required changes to servers, data and/or storage resources
Limited assistance on projects
Provide input and guidance on projects
Assist on projects relating to our client's services (Maximum 2 days a week)
Continual service improvement
To identify and implement best practices
Investigate, test and deploy new feature and functionality as introduced through upgrades and new capabilities.
Optimisation of repetitive administration tasks through integration into automation software or scripting utilising the tools and software available at the client
Create, maintain and update Solaris and application images
Simplify deployment of upgraded or new images using system management tools
Continual improvement of defined process and procedures
Integration of service within existing or new service management systems
Engage with peripheral areas (storage, network, application, database) in terms of optimisation of environment stack based on best practice or guidelines.
Review and comment on user and application data backups
Identify and correct systems resource inefficiencies
Investigate, review and propose monitoring and reporting capabilities
Ensure adherence and process requirements for 2nd& 3rd level support engagements
Analyse and comment on access control and security
Installation, setup, configuration and testing of new operating system levels and creation of pre-installation documentation, results and recommendations.
